Speech Analysis Assignment Nelson Mandela’s Inaugural Speech Nelson Mandela was elected as South Africa’s first Black President in the country’s first ever multi-racial democratic election on May 10th, 1994. His inaugural address in Pretoria holds historical significance because of the beginning of a new era in the history of South Africa. Mandela became a symbol of freedom and equality through this speech, while making a historical impact throughout the world. His words are credible and believable because people have seen him experience 27 years as a political prisoner for his anti-apartheid activities as a freedom fighter.
